Like all chronic lifestyle diseases, hypertension is one that is caused by our lifestyle. While high stress levels and lack of physical exercise contribute to hypertension, food has been found to be the main culprit.

Five easy changes to reverse hypertension.

Number one. Flaxseeds.

To get the best blood pressure lowering effects of flaxseeds, grind them to a powder and sprinkle two tablespoons on your food everyday. This has been found to be as powerful as some leading antihypertensive medications.

Number two. Meditation.

Practicing twenty minutes of Simplified Kundalini Yoga meditation morning and evening not only lowers stress, but also enhances your ability to deal with stressful situations. This helps maintaining blood pressure levels when things don't go right.

Number three. Smell Therapy.

When faced with a stressful situation, smelling a lemon or a sprig of pudina leaves immedaitely relaxes our mind and lowers our stress levels. While this may not solve the problem, it certainly helps you feel better instantly, therefore helping you solve the problem easily.

Number four. Exercise.

Incorporating at least 30 minutes of any physical exercise everyday has blod pressure lowering effects. If you are currently not doing any form of physical activity, we need to aim for forty minutes of healthy exercise or 90 minutes or moderate exercise everyday. You can start wherever you want and build up to this.

Number five. Spice and herbal teas.

Replace your daily cups of coffee and tea with milk and sugar, with one of the many traditional spiced drinks from all over the country, such as chukku kaapi, an amazingly refreshing drink made with dried ginger, jeera, dhaniya, and pepper boiled in hot water and sweetened with date syrup.
